It’s time for one more from the Women in Wine series! Farmers Jane is a collaboration between two female winemakers, both of whom are highly accomplished and neither of whom is named Jane. Angela Osborne, of A Tribute to Grace, and Faith Armstrong, of Onward Wines, teamed up to create the first Farmers Jane wine, a Field Red, in 2010. A Field White followed in 2011, and a Field Rosé in 2012. While its first vintage was 100% Chenin Blanc, the 2013 Field White, from Suisun Valley AVA, California, is a blend of 37% Albariño and 26% Verdelho from Babcock Vineyard, plus 37% 80-year-old Grenache Blanc from King Vineyard. The grapes are co-pressed, co-fermented, and aged for ten months in neutral French oak before bottling.
This is one of those wines that causes me to veer off into synesthesia. On the one hand, that’s awesome; on the other, I’m not giving you much to go on when I tell you that the wine smells like green and tastes like yellow.
Here are some more practical points: the nose offers a light cream note, backed by elements of citrus. On the palate, I’m struck immediately by the wine’s fullness and brightness. I don’t see a ton of weighty wines that offer this kind of pucker — so as an acid-head and a guy who likes big wine, I’m excited about this one! Farmers Jane Field White is packed with flavors of lemon tart and key lime pie, with a hint of nutmeg on its (very long) finish. I would pair this wine with roast pork au jus, pasta e fagioli, or paella de marisco. Oh, and if you’re still wondering, this is Jane.
